WiiM Ultra or Pro Plus for TV and stereo: choose the connection first
Compare Ultra HDMI ARC with a Pro Plus optical connection, then check PCM output, AirPlay 2 and volume control before changing an Australian home stereo.
Draw one path from the television
For a lounge with a working stereo, identify the television’s actual audio output and the amplifier’s available input. WiiM Ultra offers HDMI ARC; Pro Plus does not. A Pro Plus route may instead use the television’s optical output, if that exact TV supports it. Choosing a model before checking those two ends can leave you with extra hardware and no complete signal path.
Distinguish ARC from any HDMI socket
An HDMI socket on the TV must be the one labelled ARC or eARC, with the required settings enabled. Ultra is an HDMI ARC audio device, not an AV receiver with a bank of video inputs. Do not assume it will handle every multichannel format. Start with a supported two-channel PCM output setting and check the current TV and WiiM instructions if a source remains silent.
Plan who controls the listening level
A successful connection should leave a clear volume-control routine for everyone in the room. Check TV remote behaviour, the WiiM output setting and the amplifier’s controls before increasing the level. Optical transport does not automatically guarantee TV-remote volume control. Test a quiet broadcast and a separate music source, then document the normal sequence rather than leaving several controls at unpredictable levels.
Include the phone ecosystem in the decision
Pro Plus supports AirPlay 2; Ultra does not. For an iPhone or Mac household that relies on AirPlay, this can matter more than a display or an extra socket. Confirm how each person will start playback and which services they use. Support for one streaming method should not be read as a promise that every service or feature works in every region or subscription.
Treat a soundbar as a different job
If the lounge needs one TV-focused speaker instead of a streamer feeding the existing stereo, compare that category separately. SoundPath Lab’s 23 October documentation review says WiiM Bar and Sonos Beam (Gen 2) both rely on the TV’s ARC/eARC path and neither is a separate HDMI video switch. Beam has documented AirPlay 2 support; WiiM Bar’s AirPlay status remained pending verification in the reviewed official material. This is not a listening comparison, and its US price and availability observations are not Australian claims.
Keep the amplifier and speakers in the plan
Neither Ultra nor Pro Plus directly powers passive speakers. Keep an appropriate amplifier in that route, or use compatible powered speakers. If your present optical or analogue connection already solves the problem, an Ultra purchase is not automatically necessary. Before a change, verify cables, the exact product version and the seller’s support conditions; the comparison is a planning aid, not a local stock or performance claim.
