TV and two-channel audio without the confusion

A practical sequence

Map the signal path

Write it as TV → connection → DAC or amplifier → speakers. Optical is common and avoids HDMI control quirks, but it normally requires volume control at the audio system. HDMI ARC may allow the TV remote to control volume, but both devices must support the same feature correctly.

Set the TV to stereo PCM

If there is picture but no sound through optical or a stereo DAC, open the television’s digital-audio setting and choose PCM or stereo rather than Dolby or bitstream. Menu names vary by manufacturer, so use the exact model manual.

Choose one everyday volume control

Avoid two hidden volume stages. If optical feeds a DAC with variable output, confirm the start-up level and remote behaviour. If it feeds an amplifier at fixed level, use the amplifier’s volume control and label the input for other household members.

Test ordinary viewing

Check free-to-air television, a streaming app, a connected console and music playback. Listen for lip-sync problems and verify that powering equipment on and off is manageable. Do not add surround processing or a subwoofer unless the room and viewing habits justify it.

Connection map and symptom check

TV optical OUT → compatible optical IN → amplifier or powered speakers.

TV ARC/eARC → compatible ARC/eARC audio system → speakers.

If all sources are silent, check the selected input, mute and the receiving device's supported audio formats.
If a TV app works but an external HDMI source is silent, check that source's format separately.
If sound works but TV-remote volume does not, investigate control compatibility separately from the audio cable.
